What the treatment does
Spinal cord stimulation delivers electrical stimulation through leads near the spinal cord. Peripheral nerve stimulation targets selected nerves. Systems and treatment courses differ.
Who may be considered
A structured evaluation considers the pain diagnosis, prior care, medical risks, goals, and suitability for a trial when appropriate. A trial response does not guarantee long-term benefit.
Expectations and risks
Risks include infection, bleeding, lead movement, device problems, nerve injury, and inadequate relief. Implant care, activity precautions, and follow-up are important.
Questions to ask at your visit
- Which pain source is this treatment intended to address?
- What are the alternatives in my case?
- What improvement should we measure, and when?
- What restrictions and follow-up will I need?
