Evaluation comes first
Nerve-related pain outside the spine may be assessed with sensory and motor examination, electrodiagnostic testing, or ultrasound when appropriate. The treatment depends on whether the problem is entrapment, injury, or another disease.
Treatment considerations
Options may include rehabilitation, medication, selected ultrasound-guided injections, and peripheral nerve stimulation. Each has specific indications and risks; injections can cause bleeding, infection, medication effects, or nerve injury.
Questions for your clinician
- How confident are we about the pain source?
- What is the evidence for this option in my situation?
- What are the alternatives, limitations, and procedure-specific risks?
- What function do we expect to improve?
Availability and suitability are determined during clinical evaluation. This page describes options, not an individual treatment recommendation.
